Mustique - A brief history...

In 1958, the island of Mustique was purchased by The Honourable Colin Tennant. Princess Margaret accepted Colin Tennant's 10-acre plot of land as a wedding present in 1960. In 1969, a change of policy opened Mustique to outsiders who were willing to preserve the island's original character and an economic development agreement was entered into between the government of St. Vincent and The Mustique Company. In 1969, the airport was opened, and the first villas were built.

Mustique has retained its privacy and tranquillity. Protecting the environment and the peaceful way of life is of paramount importance to all who live and vacation here. Mustique is an intriguing and very special island, one of the most exclusive and secure private islands in the world.

St. Vincent and The Grenadines - A brief history...

St. Vincent, otherwise known by the Caribs as Hairoun ("Land of the Blessed") is the largest of the more than 30 islands that comprise the nation. The Grenadines, frequently referred to as the "Jewels of the Caribbean", extend 72 km to the southwest like a kite's tail. The major islands north to south are Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreaux, Union Island, Palm Island, and Petit St. Vincent.

St. Vincent was first inhabited by the Ciboney. The Arawak, who entered the West Indies from Venezuela, gradually displaced the Ciboney. The peace-loving Arawaks were in turn conquered by the more warlike Carib Indians, who aggressively prevented European settlement on St. Vincent until their eventual defeat in 1796.

Beginning in 1719, French settlers cultivated various crops worked by African slaves. In 1763, St. Vincent was ceded to Britain. Restored to French rule in 1779, St. Vincent was regained by the British under the treaty of Versailles in 1783.

From 1763 until independence, St. Vincent passed through various stages of colonial status under the British, with slavery being abolished in 1834. A representative assembly was authorized in 1776, Crown Colony government installed in 1877, a legislative council created in 1925, and universal adult suffrage was granted in 1951.
